Movim can now handle video calls with a SFU!

It works with exactly the same flow as the full P2P (Muji) version: you start a call in a group chat and others can join, but with a huge bandwidth optimization behind the scenes. ✨

To switch your group chat video call to SFU, simply invite an SFU XMPP service into it. That's it!

And here's a little surprise 🎁!

The upcoming #Movim release will come with a bundled SFU #XMPP service that you can connect to any XMPP server, thanks to the widely deployed XEP-0114: Jabber Component Protocol 👀. This service wraps the #Galene project.

Rocket.Chat adding support for #XMPP is very good news.

Monocles, a #Conversations_im fork, is now making heavy use of LLM-generated code. Including its cryptography.

Meanwhile it hasn't backported critical security fixes that landed in Conversations (and other forks) over a year ago.

Great day at #Fedicon yesterday. I met lots of new people from the #ActivityPub community. I've always thought that #XMPP and the #Fediverse are ideologically well-aligned, and that our developer communities should talk to each other more. In that regard, it was a big success.

#Conversations_im is now available for free on Google Play until August 18th.

Whenever there is a conference with a strong #XMPP presence, I like to make the app available for free to make it easier for attendees to install the app and give XMPP a shot.

We are attending #IETF126 in Vienna. The #XMPP community is represented at the Hackathon and we are hosting a side meeting on Thursday at 15:00 (Park Suite 4) to introduce the idea of bringing XMPP 2.0 back to the IETF.

Google is now buying access to source code repositories to train their LLMs. This puts the value of the code they previously stole from the open-source community into a whole new perspective.

I’m committed to keeping the quicksy.im XMPP server running for at least 24 months.
XMPP servers are extremely efficient. I’m serving the ~1500 concurrent users from a toaster, so the cost of running the server itself was never an issue.

Users are however advised to eventually migrate to the app Conversations by backing up the account in Quicksy and importing it into Conversations (write down the Quicksy password beforehand).

People don’t understand that this SMS pumping fraud is organized crime on a mafia level. First, they attack your service to deliberately run up SMS fees (splitting the profits among themselves), and then they turn around and try to extort protection money by selling you a subscription to a service that "fixes" the issue. The entire fucking industry is in cahoots.

#Quicksy registrations are permanently closed.
The project was viable for a long time only because it required minimal effort. However, fighting industrial-scale SMS pumping fraud has become unsustainable, both financially and in terms of workload.

The XMPP server will remain online for the foreseeable future, but users are advised to switch their client to #Conversations_im.
