This is a photo of my motorbike  with the seat removed. At the bottom you see the lid that covers the battery, with a small fuse holder to its right. On the left is a four circuit auxillary fuse box I have just bought, and a bus bar for grounding, and above that is the accessory power box which controls the accessories (clue's in the name) that only come on  when the ignition's on. There's a relay in it which is energised by a wire you mostly can't see, which is spliced into the tail light power.

To the right, and in the middle, and basically all over the place, you see some of the cables with ring terminals and inline fuse holders which are cluttering up the whole undertray and which the plan was to replace with nice neat wires into the new aux fuse box (and the busbar for ground).

Anyway, I have spent a thoroughly unsatisfying couple of hours this evening trying to arrange all this stuff in a way which is physically secure, which provides for sensible cable routing, which is not too tall to stop the seat from being reattached, and which leaves space for the cargo net and disc lock which also live under the seat, and I think I'm at the point of giving up and going back to having four ring terminals attached to each battery post.  This was supposed to take up less room than the tangle of wires, but it doesn't fit in the space (bottom left, where the white "CBR600F1" sticker is) that the tangle was mostly occupying

Mood: bit annoyed.

I thought I'd killed the serial on one of my liminix test boards, so I tried another and that was printing garbage as well. So I suspected the usb uart adapter (and I tried another, but the other one was broken altogether), but the adapter was working fine when I stuck a jumper tx-rx.

It seems the problem is minicom, because screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 is working just fine.

At least I don't have to go hunting far and wide for another genuine ftdi ft232 cable, but what has happened to minicom?

ran nix-collect-garbage -d on the box that runs liminix hydra, and maybe I should make plans to do something else for the rest of the morning while it's running

I can brush the rubber off the sidewall with my thumb to see the tyre carcass underneath. Perhaps I should fit new tyres before I set off for Dunwich

Haven't seen any chat in my feed about the #DunwichDynamo - anyone doing it this year? I am doing my usual thing of joining the ride where it crosses the A406  but probably not my traditional thing of trying to navigate with  the route sheet, because what happened the last two times is that by the time I needed to check directions it was too dark to read the paper. Might give in and use phone/gpx

There is some very tired-looking sealant of some kind between the ram air ducts and the holes in the air filter housing they plug into, and I am wondering if i should clean that all off and put fresh rtv sealant on, or if it was slathered on prophylactically by a previous owner and serves no actual purpose. I'm only considering the latter possibility because you should see wat they did to the exhaust pipes

Today I have been realising just how much I fall back on a collection of  facebook groups for motorcycle stuff and pondering how to replace that when facebook starts requiring my official id to prove I am not a child.

It would be a good idea in any case to divest from Zuck, as the FB feed is getting more and more full of ragebait

Every service/maintenance/repair job I have ever successfully done on my motorbike has been accompanied by a massive sense of relief when I finish it and the bike still runs

I wonder if there's a point where the expectation of success becomes normal
