It was another good day for mushrooms. There was a moment when there were so many around me, it smelled just like when I'm chopping mushrooms in the kitchen. And there was a lot of wind that chased away the mosquitoes, so it was just me in my favorite place, the forest, without any sprays.

A true story, even if anecdata. My conclusion is that old people in public areas tend to calm things down.
I once was single and working for a paper in Denver. I happened to be rooming in a house in a Hispanic neighborhood. Never thought about it much, walked around to stores, the park , etc.
As things happened, I moved on, and was talking to my elderly landlord (who was Hispanic). He said he was sad I was leaving. He mentioned that he and his pals made sure I was safe walking around, by sitting on their porches and giving the young men the evil eye if they looked too bumptious.It goes to show you that there are undercurrents in public spaces you may never be aware of.

I am all for old folks in public spaces, and think there should be more public benches, more porches, more places to congregate innocently. And more old people hanging out, keeping an eye on things.
