Among the fascinating (to me, anyway) items when I toured the Great Lakes freighter William A. Irvin in Duluth Thursday was the woodwork for the staircase in the pilot house. In addition to the captain’s quarters are four guest rooms and a guest lounge; VIPs and celebrities were known to go on mini-cruises as the ship sailed the Great Lakes and did so on other ships as well. The whole thing just … kicked ass.

@mcnado Ship resupply logistics is not a sexy, prestigious sort of job. There's no "Top Gun" movie for sliding chipped beef across cables to the "more important" and more expensive ship. My guess is that logistics was more heavily staffed by non-male, non-white sailors and officers, and took a larger hit when the idiot fascists purged them. The ones who replaced them only know "pew pew boom boom" and can't get the supply jobs done efficiently.

A new solar lighthenge discovery 🌞🙂

Walked into my bedroom at just the right moment this afternoon to find this beautiful patch of illumination on the wall.

It’s sunlight reflected from a dormer window on a house down the valley to the south, sneaking through a narrow gap into my balcony door. The leaf shadows are vines on the neighbour’s wall.

Lasted just a minute & I may never see it again given the angle, time of day & year, & brevity.

Now there’s a metaphor …
