I’m struggling to engage here a bit. On the one hand, bad news from around the world on the climate change & bird flu fronts is so awfully daunting. On the other, chatting about nice little things I do & experience in my relatively privileged life seems awfully self-indulgent…

However, I know that glimpses into other people’s lives are a great source of joy for me, so maybe I should contribute?

It’s a grey, cold & rainy day here today, & Partner has cancelled golf. I have some chores to do, not much, & will paint. I’ve taken the cats out the back between showers, and they are now chasing each other around the house. There’s been no squeals, so it’s all good fun.

The possums have been hungry, as you can see from the very sad state of my vertical garden, so I’ve started leaving fruit & vege scraps out for them. ( The lemon is “caged” at night.)

Something must be busy in the soil, as the cats have taken an intense interest in a particular spot. My citrus butterfly chrysalis is still green & healthy, so 🤞🏼it will get right through winter.

I have struggled most of my life to understand what I feel and what I want, but oddly I am hyper aware of the things I DON'T want.

Good morning, I hope you're doing ok and Saturday is kind to you.

We have another family visit today. This one is a bit further and we will probably arrive about 11. It might get a bit emotional for some of them.
I've got lots on my mind but I'm way too tired to think about it all.

Yesterday I bought this fab little bag from a wonderful lady at the arts festival, it will be perfect for storing threads for cross stitch projects. We had a great discussion about how buying material/threads/yarn/any crafty stuff and then actually using them are entirely different hobbies. Anyone into crafting knows this to be true.

If you’re at MathFest, be sure to check out the art exhibit. I have a couple of pieces there, including a painting of the geometry of longitudes and a set of bracelets I made with cellular automata. You can see from my first photograph that I’ve done this painting more than once because I wanted to update it for the conference. In doing the second version, I screwed up one of the, illustrations in the center column and so I had to do it twice to get it right. #mathart #geometry

Almost none of the governments involved dispute the science. They accept the diagnosis. What they increasingly reject is the treatment. The treatment, to be clear, is not any single policy; reasonable people disagree about instruments and pace. It is the willingness to adopt measures proportionate to the diagnosis. The difference between disagreement and denial shows in behavior: disagreement rejects a policy and proposes another one of comparable scale. Denial rejects every policy and proposes nothing. To understand why that willingness is collapsing, you have to look somewhere climate commentary rarely goes: at what psychology and medicine know about how people handle knowledge they can’t bear."

Reaching through time.
Wonderful drop spindle with stone whorl. Over 5000 years old - and the spun fibers on the cop are crosswise wound like we still do it today (and how I teach it in my workshops, I just like to wind it in a slightly other form). Thinking about how this spindle was lost.
