Walked into my bedroom at just the right moment this afternoon to find this beautiful patch of illumination on the wall.
It’s sunlight reflected from a dormer window on a house down the valley to the south, sneaking through a narrow gap into my balcony door. The leaf shadows are vines on the neighbour’s wall.
Lasted just a minute & I may never see it again given the angle, time of day & year, & brevity.

🔴 A defense contractor is now selling technology that scans every electronic device in your car as you drive past a camera. It ties everything to your license plate. You cannot opt out.
It is called SignalTrace. Made by Leonardo, an Italian military contractor with existing U.S. Special Operations Command contracts. It sweeps your phone, smartwatch, Bluetooth headphones, your dog's RFID chip, tire pressure sensors, your car's infotainment system. Anything that broadcasts.
It bundles these into what Leonardo calls your "electronic fingerprint," timestamped and geotagged. Stored in an "Enterprise Operations Center for future queries and analysis."
Those are their words. Not mine.
You did not consent. You cannot opt out. Your devices broadcast by existing. In most places, this is perfectly legal.
If this sounds like something that will be abused: it already has been. Police have used existing license plate reader networks to stalk partners, verify school residency, run background checks, and monitor protests. At least 22 officers charged or resigned for ALPR stalking.
SignalTrace does not read your messages. It does not need to. It knows who you travel with, where you go, and when.

@ajroach42 "old-time" music was absolutely a term of the 30s, and it didn't really mean old music by then, it meant current music inspired by old folk music; often modern (at the time) recordings of old folk standards in a modern style with modern instrumentation. And, fun fact, bluegrass was a modern (at the time) jumping off from old-time music and jazz and blues, almost a reaction to old-time, though it shared some influence. Bluegrass was a very modern musical style in its day and a relatively recent invention, younger than jazz.
Not so fun fact, almost every "bluegrass style" cover on YouTube is actually not bluegrass, and is more likely an ignorant parody of old-time music.
Obviously, they were playing fast and loose with the terminology when they called that version of Man of Constant Sorrow an old-time tune. Obviously that's a modern parody of the style.

Now THIS is how you respond to powerful people who are disingenuously “just asking questions” and “just bringing up concerns…”. Scientists have often tried to counter such things with mild mannered educational language which is apparently easily ignored. Apparently THIS is how you take them to school.
I see more and more people suggesting the French Solution to our problems.

My cat DJ loved french fries! She would laboriously climb up on the arm of the kitchen chair (she was blind) and tap me as if to say, "Can I have one?" I would eventually give in and give her one, which she would take down to the floor to eat. She would then climb back up and tap me again, "Can I have another?" 😄
Wow — Spokane did an evacuation drill back in April! That might help explain why, even though the recent fire was devastating in the number of homes and other buildings destroyed, it seems there was no loss of life and a hospital was able to do a successful evacuation.
"The city learned about evacuation bottlenecks, the types of warnings and directions that were most effective and other challenges. The exercise also encouraged residents to sign up for emergency alerts, familiarize themselves with evacuation routes and think through critical decisions before an actual wildfire threatened their homes."
