Today was a sad day for the Cartoon Art Museum, where I've been on the board for over 25 years.

Today was our last day at 781 Beach Street where we've been for the last decade.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the museum and its mission over the last 42 years.

I miss Ralph Eggleston.

Ralph would find some part of this funny.

He was the first super legit Oscar winning artist who gave us original artwork to auction off for our fundraisers.

He was so generous, you can’t even put a box around how generous Ralph was to the arts community.

I don't think normal folks that think they're all swell with their local arts community understand how off kilter they are.

In our arts-underfunded country, museums are (for the most part) at best grossly underfunded by their local (i.e. county/state) arts organizations.

Why so local?

Well, local is great, but it would be awesome (in a federated, ya know - “united states” sort of situation) that a local arts organization could also draw on the larger federated organization…

I really hate that there's a company called “Thinking Machines Lab" that keep shortening their name to “Thinking Machines”, which is a company I worked at in the 90s that made the Connection Machine.

I'm a member of all the museums (that I know of) in SF, so went to a member preview of the new show at the DeYoung. Lovely musem, although the show is relatively small.
So easy to make a day of it, though, with all the great museums, parks and just lovely stuff to see in that part of SF.

Go see it if you can!

Does anyone on here have knowledge or advice about visiting Portland? I would like to take a train trip to Portland and basically bike around eating food and just absorbing the atmosphere. I don’t know what time of year would work best for doing this. Thanks!

Then, ideally, be helpful.

But nail that first part.

I don't know if there's a god, but there *are* other people, and you help them by being kind.

That should be good enough reason to do it.

And to be clear - at least for me, being kind is not easy.

It’s a lot of work.

It means not judging people too quckly.

It means taking a pause in uncomfortable situatons.

It’s a big ask.

I work on it (w/limited success) every day.

But please do try.

Hey, are there are any serious sewers out there?

My wife has an old (but not *good* old) sewing machine, and I'd love to get her an upgrade, but I'm not sure where/how to look into this space.

I'm capable of using google and all the LLMs, so don't need generic pointers, but any personal recommendations appreciated.

Finally had a weekend at home with no real “prep for upcoming travel” so I finally cooked some pizzas in my new #ooni pizza oven.

Other than icing up my propane tank, which i’d never seen before, our two pizzas were a big hit.

Per usual here, we used an Indian based tomato base with a bit of spice and otherwise pretty standard Neapolitan 00 flour dough w/shredded mozzarella.

So much easier/better than our old little Ooni oven.

Pizza ovens are like 3D printers - evolving fast for the better.
