The Parkway is a great little theater. The show both indie and mainstream movies. In-house concessions are decent and not too expensive (pizza!). Was there recently for the Backrooms.

This is the Salam Grocery & Restaurant in West Oakland. They have all sorts of middle-eastern tasty things I've never seen for sale anywhere else. Also It's-Its.

I think this is the one that started it all. Pacific Jazz Records discs are actually rare and pretty nice (they're all "cool jazz", so admittedly only if that's something you want to listen to). It turned up in an antique shop. I've never just stumbled across any by chance since, but I've ordered a few from Discogs.

There's supposed to be record store in LA run by a cranky old guy who only wants to deal with serious collectors and will throw you out if you're just browsing. Sort of curious if I'd pass the test. I suspect if I went in asking for one of these I would.

These guys were local, and my dad was a fan. So worth splurging a whole $8!

I did some record shopping. They were all cheap! Some were from a thrift store and literally $1.95.

In the second picture the building in the background is the former Oakland main Depot. You can see a truncated bit of an elevated platform. This was for the #SouthernPacific red electric commuter trains, which ran over the Bay Bridge.

While we tend to focus on loss of language diversity in therms of "really different" languages, like Celtic languages or Basque, there are plenty of "extreme dialects" that really count as separate languages, like Provencal, or Scots, and these have been disappearing too.

The theory is that linguistic diversity peaked between 3000-1000 years ago.

Hunter-gatherers were divided up into lots of small groups, but there just weren't that many of them.

As agriculture developed, the global population exploded, but linguistic/cultural groups remained small, until the development of larger centrally organized states.

The paper seems to be describing results of a predictive model, rather than empirical results. And probably much of this loss was happening at times and places where no solid evidence was being record (e.g., preliterate societies).

But there are plenty of recorded examples. How many languages were replaced by Latin? Must be dozens.

"South Carolina is now one of a dozen states with a statewide safety stop law. The details vary, but the basic principle has spread across red and blue states alike: people on bikes must slow down, yield to anyone with the right of way, and stop whenever safety requires it. Some states apply the rule only to stop signs; others also let riders proceed through red lights after stopping and yielding.” And in #SouthCarolina the bike friendliness extends further: "Right turns on red require slowing and yielding but not a complete stop.”

There's always neat/weird art at this spot SE of the SF ferry building.
Years ago there was the "gothic rocketship", which I hear is now at a mall in Colorado.
For a while there was a big spider.
Now there's a big giant clam on legs, or tentacles maybe.
I'm going to call it H. P. Loveclam.
