And i still see the aftershocks of this in #ttrpg chat rooms and social media.
Occasionally people break out in just hateful rants about imaginary enemies in one corner of the subculture or another.
If people just focused on the common ground of the games they like to play and sharing creative ideas, this would fix most of the problems.
But social media is swamped with people trying to be influencers and monetizing their creativity rather than build community.
It remains more cultish because of this than the very freewheeling creative spaces that we shared before everyone erupted in hating particular figures and conflating this with superficial political identifiers.

I have a vague idea that there are backpacks with some kind of mesh standoff that lets air through and avoids this problem.

One of the most divisive #ttrpg creators was Zak Sabbath, an incredibly talented artist, writer, and designer who unfortunately also became fixated on eradicating the toxic hate cults from gaming spaces.
He wasn’t wrong in his criticism of a few of the truly awful people, and for a brief time this worked to clean up some spaces of bad actors. But it also created a culture of looking for enemies everywhere while creating enemies who tatgeted Zak. And he gathered a loose cult of personality around himself.
The bile eventually rose up to drown him in slander and libel when his marriage broke up in a very public way. And he was driven into homelessness for a time.
He is still vehemently hated for this to this day. What the community did was wrong. But he also inadvertently created the problem he tried to eradicate and it hurt him badly.
And now that they've signed to Warner, this will (probably) never happen again!

A phenomenon I have repeatedly encountered over the last fifteen years in #ttrpg spaces is that the most contentious and hostile communities tend to be dominated by people who superficially align with inclusive identity politics. Their online spaces are generally much less inclusive and turn on one another.
The reason is that much of the bonding and group identity in the unhealthy groups is not about games but about who the bad people in gaming are.
I think this last bit is the crux of it rather than the superficial politics of the people.
The perfect example of this is that a particularly right wing game space was also incredibly hostile. the person who started it was constantly going on about his persecution complex for his right wing views and calling out lefty gamers as villains. And members kinda joined up with this cult of personality.
Same monster. Different clothes.
