Good examples:

Many tech YouTubers spread misinformation because they don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Many political YouTubers, podcasters, and figures spread disinformation to further agendas that serve themselves or a group that they serve.

You should verify this because I could just as easily be spreading disinformation!

Both dis and misinformation can appear from where you least expect it to.

And in case you weren't aware of the difference:
misinformation is when incorrect information is spread without the intent of deceiving (ie, accidentally sharing bad/incorrect info), while disinformation is spread with the intent to deceive.

Remember y'all,

Just because something you see confirms your biases, that doesn't necessarily make it true.

It's not always malicious - it could just as easily be a misunderstanding, or an incorrect attributing of correlation to causation.

Anyone know why an IceShrimp.NET instance running in a docker container would unexpectedly and intermittently become unresponsive without an obvious answer in the logs?

Disk space isn't an issue, and I tried moving the instance to a more performant server which also didn't resolve the issue. Sometimes it's seemingly just the frontend that becomes unresponsive with the instance showing up, but feed and notifications showing infinite loading. Other times, it won't load at all, causing a '502 - bad gateway' error on the reverse proxy side. It seems to be somewhat random when it happens, and the server's I/O and resources don't get maxed out or otherwise stressed when this is happening.

#DuckDuckFedi

I knew it was getting bad when I was regularly seeing more meaningful moderation action out of fucking mastodon.social, and they are far bigger.

This may not be very meaningful as I'm running a small instance with a handful of users, but I'm going to take what feels like a big step.

We will be defederating *.absturztau.be by the end of the month.

I've got an internal announcement for our users, but I wanted to put something public to encourage other smaller instances to (re)consider how they want to interact with instances like these, as well as to make connections I have with users on that server aware of this impending action.

I've been considering doing this for a while, but with recent nonsense bubbling up and stressing me the fuck out with meaningful moderation yet again nowhere to be seen (as it has been as long as I've been on Fedi and aware of those instances, really), I decided it was time.

"That's not really actionable"

Fine, allow me.

:neofox_sob: Rest in peace, Margaret Hamilton.

You were, and may you continue to be an incredible inspiration for many a young girl (or anyone, really) aspiring to be a computer toucher, and/or looking to enter the field which you helped coin, software engineering.

I also want to note to the person who wrote the subsequent "Killing men" post, then deleting it after others rightly asked "What the fuck?", and then brushed it off as "just a joke";

Joking about hating or killing someone because of an inherent trait that is out of their control isn't fucking cool, and you should know better.

I genuinely hope you don't continue to fall in with that toxic crowd.

If you have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about, thank your mod team and/or your social circles. :neofox_heart:

I get that y'all refuse to acknowledge a certain word, so I'll just call it for what it is:

Man-hating

Raging at systemic oppression is reasonable, but doing something like broadly and casually calling for or cheering on the killing of men is super yikes, and is not helping your cause at all.

Get that toxic TLA/xenofemme bullshit the fuck outta here

Self-proclaimed feminists are poisoning the fuck out of the term, goodness. :neofox_glare:

Seeing the kind of awful misinformation and garbage that spouts out of the one that she is defending in the replies of her post is a big fuckin' yikes. This one's a defed recommendation from me, in case it wasn't already clear.

Ahh, just noticed the hammer and sickle on her banner image too. Tasteful. /sarcastic :neofox_woozy:

Uhhhh, that certainly is a take. For those of us living in reality, a reminder that Russia has been antagonizing Ukraine for quite a while, and the escalation with the "special military operation" in Feb 2022 is nothing short of abhorrent.

With all due respect (very little, tbh), go fuck yourself, Kim.

Silly goose, you don't need some chatbot or a local llm!
