Christmas Train season begins! A couple weeks of test runs before we start running for the public mid-November. I also said hi to Franklin (who was napping in the dim shop) when I got off the train :) #choochoo

Something about the new-ish iOS syllabics keyboard, when it pops up first thing in the morning if I’d been using it the night before, triggers the “oh no this is still a dream my phone is still weird and unusable” thought in my brain before I realize what’s going on 😂 The old one that followed the QWERTY layout didn’t do that, but evidently novel keyboard shapes do.

Just realized that while testing/optimizing this curses app, I have a serial connection running at 9600bps between this laptop and another laptop 2' to my left, then an IP connection from there to a server ~650km away. And the connection to the other laptop 2' away from me is the slow part of that.

The future is wild.

Well, it’s hacked together, but it works well enough for now :)

Weirdly, I'm kind of enjoying working at 9600 and chose to just do my editing over the serial link rather than SSHing to the server and doing it there. 9600 is snappier than I remember it being the last time I had to do any serious work over it.

Well, I want HotSyncing my Palm OS devices to work on FreeBSD, so I guess I'm about to learn a whole lot about FreeBSD drivers.

No. No it does not.

Need to test how a frontend works over a 9600bps link, this was the easiest way I could think of :)

Anyone have recommendations for rack-mount ~500VA on-line (not line-interactive) UPSs for the North American market?

Already up to 300 challenges served and it hasn't even been up for an hour yet. That was easier than I expected to get up and running with :) It's annoying that it's now a required piece of infrastructure any time I want to spin up a new non-static site, but I'm glad it exists.

Almost 3 million requests to my projects wiki last month. ~50 of them weren't AI scrapers. Time for anubis, I guess.

#senCloudStatus PHP has been upgraded to the version containing the vulnerability fix, and services should be restored. Thanks for your patience!

#senCloudStatus We're all ready for a quick update tomorrow across regions once the new PHP patch is released.

Someone at the makerspace last week asked how I seemingly know how to use every tool from sewing machines to soldering irons and lathes to lasers, and my reply was that my favourite thing to do is learn. Whenever people ask what I want to _do_ with a skill I’m learning I often have no response, I just love learning things to learn them and get good at them. I’ll definitely find uses later, but it’s not why I learn stuff.

Started learning to do single-point threading on the lathe tonight as well. Took me a couple tries but got a thread in the end! Next up is making one to a more precise diameter that will actually thread into something :)

Still a long way to go, but for my first TIG T joint I won’t complain!

Quite the error message from $vendor's management app today.

Okay, it’s possible there’s a couple small issues left to sort out 😂 Either that or this laptop has _way_ better battery life than I remembered.

I needed a laptop that can cross the border, I’d usually take my Haiku laptop but Haiku can’t send video to both internal display plus HDMI yet, so it’s not great for giving presentations.

Figured I’d try a BSD on a laptop since I hadn’t before, NetBSD unfortunately doesn’t support the (soldered-on) wifi on the spare laptop I had, but FreeBSD does! Feels like Linux did awhile ago (in a mostly-good way). Still getting everything set up but all the critical stuff seems to work now.

Yes, this will do. #palmos
