Microsoft deserves credit for being the dumbest company out there that's financially successful.

Other companies like Google, Oracle, Cloudflare, Adobe, et merda, do dumb shit all the time, but they do those things because they're evil and intentionally want to cause problems. Microsoft is just plain dumb.

A good example is that the Outlook (the email service) has existed since 2012, yet it's never not broken. Since some time around March 18th of this year, they decided to say fuck it to the idea of having server names match the connecting IPs.

For example, BL0PR03CU003.outbound.protection.outlook.com resolves to 2a01:111:f403:c101::7, but the server that claims to be "BL0PR03CU003" (HELO / EHLO name) connects using 2a01:111:f403:c101::1.

    Those aren't the same, Microsoft!

How TF does someone get this in front of someone at Microsoft / Outlook without going nuts?

@AnachronistJohn In order to go nuts, you’d have to actually look at it, and in the age of Copilot, I’m not convinced anyone at Microsoft is looking at anything anymore.

@AnachronistJohn Since we're both old farts, you might recall that Hotmail was an independent operation that was acquired by Microsoft. Naturally, Hotmail ran extremely well, but it ran Linux. MS Couldn't let that stand, so they re-implemented it in whatever MS crap was state of the fuckery at the time, and really, it has never recovered.

@alan I can’t think of anything that’s recovered since being bought by Microsoft… LinkedIn actually got a little less scammy for a little while after Microsoft bought it, but now it’s worse than it’s ever been.

@alan Ha ha ha… This is what I get when I ask Microsoft fanbois to name some things that Microsoft genuinely created and contributed to the world. This, or they list things that Microsoft bought ;)

@AnachronistJohn Yeah, even the WinNT internals looked a hell of a lot like the VAX internals, which looked a HELL of a lot like the Xerox CP-V internals.

It's like 15 years later and I'm looking at this stuff and I know what all the flags mean. 😂

@alan Someone wrote up a little article back then discussing the cost of Microsoft CALs (or whatever they’re called) that’d’ve been needed to run Hotmail, and it was just bonkers. I wish I could find that again.

It reminds me of discussions with other people who took their jobs too seriously - like if Novell were really such hot shit, then what would the world look like if the whole world were networked with IPX instead of TCP/IP? People can act like children supporting their favorite superhero, but when it really comes down to it, could any of those proprietary things scale?

With all the resources in the world, Outlook.com is still shit.
