I see the car company's stock is rising on news that the designer of its worst selling model, a complete corporate embarrassment, is planning to devote more time to the business.

Mastodon is likely named for a fossil local to me: Bill Kelliher, raised in NY, chose the name for the band, and @Gargron invented the software a couple hours away from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt.

The Warren Mastodon (found 1845) is at AMNH in New York, and Peale's Mastodon (1799) is in Darmstadt; both found in/near Newburgh NY, and both responsible for worldwide knowledge of and scientific interest in the creatures.

While you definitely don’t “have to hand it to” the NRA on anything, its impending dissolution is the model for all nonprofits—create the social conditions that nullify your raison d’être. (For the record that’s terrible for the US/world in this case…But imagine the same pattern for nonprofits that seek to do good.)

The blossoming of craft and repair culture on streaming services — baking, pottery, glassblowing, repair shop—on top of its popularity on YouTube, the expansion of my local pottery to a second studio, Cali’s new right to repair law, and the sudden appearance of a pottery-themed product story in the J Peterman catalogue suggest to me that Something Is Afoot in the culture. A fad? Prob. But a fad worth cultivating.

It seems clear that the reason our country refuses to do anything about gun massacres is because an influential chunk of the populace embraces nihilism, a fetish for death, and, perhaps most of all, the constant threat of violence as a mechanism for social and political dominance.

We drove into town & I saw a municipal building with a distant town’s name on it and said “that’s weird—why would that building have that town’s name on it?” Later found out someone is shooting a teevee show set in the other town.
