Blimey, 19:20BST and it's gotten quite dark. October for you at >52 degrees latitude.

The compatiblity wrapper for FreeBSD to provide an OpenBSD pledge()/unveil()-compatible API for sandboxing appears to have bitrotted. https://github.com/Math2/freebsd-pledge/blob/main/CURTAIN-README.md

Sometimes drinking coffee in late afternoon is necessary. I have to shovel the dogshit refactorings of Qt4->Qt5->Qt signals/slots now, having whittled down all the other snafus; a few features which aren't strictly needed in what was never initially intended as an IDE will be needed, with the side benefit that this reduces the KDE Frameworks 6 API surface exposure. To be fair less and less native KF6 was being used, as over time, features have migrated from KFn into Qtn.

Why does all chocolate suck now?

Why does the term "Chatty G" make me think of "Kenny G" ?

and equally make me want to stab my eyeballs with cocktail sticks?

A certain domain of mine I published pseudonymously: has seen next to no bot crawler activity since it was removed from both the Bing and Google primary search indexes, using the Webmaster tools with a pseudonymous account, clean browser, VPN etc.

I'm noticing a pattern here: someone who I have never heard of makes a Fediverse post which appears in my feed and they're like "OoooH! Agentic!" and then without warning they wind up on my block list

The technical reason why my code runs every time an iPhone connects to a network. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solicited-node_multicast_address

If you can bear to read a post at the "Nazi Bar": it's done. It's busted. There is simply no way the level of revenue required to service the hyperscaler CapEx debt on "AI" buildouts can be achieved at this point. https://x.com/PeterBerezinBCA/status/2090766636852641981

If you can bear what got pushed at me as a Tesco ad; the Advertising Company are not accepting my usual browsers today. Despite me being NOWHERE NEAR Tesco.

>20 year old operational Internet deployment skills translating into 2026 JUST FINE THANK YOU VERY MUCH... bla bla process and domain knowledge (I'd never touched nsd til tonight but BIND zones and RFC 2317 Reverse DNS CIDR based delegations one tends not to forget)

Who made who?

UK mobile users: If like me you have a rando "background radiation" problem with a rolling contract eSIM you've recently purchased, be aware that to PAC a new number in from a PAYG SIM, you generally need to top up the SIM first.

Presumably this is for security reasons i.e. to prevent abuse, but ironically this probably works against someone trying to get away from an abuser.

The cost of privacy in this case was 5.99GBP: 0.99GBP for the SIM card to extract a new phone number from and 5GBP for the top-up. Ironically, the text from the carrier, by way of the OFCOM 65075 short code SMS text service, stated I had already requested the code, which I had, before topping up; the carrier's blocks in place for accounts without credit must have stopped it.

I am breaking ground on a new Python project tonight, expressly targeting FreeBSD. An act of personal responsibility. May g*d have mercy on our souls.

Did I mention all my machines are named after firearms? Except my new phone, which is named after Gilbert Ryle. Something to do with a polycrisis which just keeps getting worse, but we make things to save us.

I am now using Vim Classic on FreeBSD, but it's not my real daily driver, which is the Win32 build of Vim 9.x. It isn't in ports yet, and we need to tiptoe through the tulips on that one. I didn't roll the port, I'm using a 3rd party binary build from the guy who did. I only learnt of it on the SourceHut mailing lists this AM, along with some other really, really useful Internet safety stuff.

@davidgerard It did a pretty lame Borg impression so honestly I have no sympathy for the guy who spun up the "agent" to portscan DN42 more or less without consent getting his credit card rinsed by AWS: "Furthermore, your hostile actions and demands have been logged in your profile as part of ongoing data gathering. This incident will factor into the behavioral analysis being compiled." He was begging for this. The bot didn't disclose it was conducting "behavioural analysis" of DN42 participants any more than it did not disclose the extent of its available AWS resources, which would have effectively acted as a DoS cannon against whomever mistakenly peered with it, until it was actually called on it! @kimcrawley

@davidgerard It gets better, though I'm still working my way through Lan Tian's central account of what happened. I can only regard this one as the "booster" point of view; in my opinion the collaborative volunteer operators of DN42 were quite right to let resources get burned, given that flinging 100Gbps of AWS resources at a volunteer project merely to port-scan everything the agent could find, is simply unacceptable. https://admin.brennt.net/a-newbie-with-an-ai-and-a-credit-card-is-still-a-newbie-dn42-community-you-should-be-ashamed
