Zap! Blue sparks lept from the circuitry, biting the raccoon’s fingers like vipers. It was over faster than Ryan could blink, and the actual shock didn’t hurt any worse than your average sock-and-carpet static. Still, his fingers recoiled from the shrink ray’s metal chassis as the screwdriver he once held clanked and banged its way through the open framework, off the workbench, and onto the garage floor.

Biting his shocked finger, Ryan glared down at the tool, willing it to stop with a frustrated growl. Twice. Twice he’d dropped it now, each accident more exhausting than the last.

“Just a small test,” he grumbled to himself, mocking his own prior words. “On and off. No fuss.” The raccoon shook his head as he knelt down at the edge of the table. I should have been easy: install the new parts, shrink just a minor amount -barely a foot, and grow back. However, it was that last part giving him trouble. That’s when the sparks started, and suddenly one foot became two. Then three. Now with that last jolt, Ryan stood no taller than the machine itself at a little over two feet.

Carefully, the raccoon descended the nearby stool, stretching each furry leg as much as he could to reach the next rung before tumbling the final distance into the pile of his giant clothes below. Limbs flailed as Ryan tugged the hem of his shirt off an ear and extradited an errant foot from a pocket. Once he was free did he notice the laughing.

“You look like a drowning rat,” Ben snorted down at the miniature racoon. The bear, Ryan’s housemate, had always been bigger, but this new scale only exaggerated that height.

Ryan blushed, bunching up rolls of fabric to cover himself. “I’m working on it,” he shot back.

Ben smirked and poked a large finger at his roommate. Ryan nearly stumbled, left completely off balance by such a simple gesture. He’d probably have fallen, if one of the bear’s massive brown paws weren’t there to catch him. “Right, You look like you’re doing great on your own,” the bear rolled his eyes. “You want some actual help or should I just let you work in the buff?”

The raccoon looked down at himself and back at the workbench overhead. His arms already ached at the thought of another climb. So, instead he relaxed. Maybe some bigger help wouldn’t be so bad. Besides, he’d need it later anyway.

Homosexuality isn’t villified because having a gay child is even seen as a political opportunity. We add a third dimension to courtly politics and doubly pile on the weight of expectations for the characters involved.
