@ancientsounds @micke That's the thing, isn't it? And even if somehow you get a consistent spelling at some point, there's no guarantee of it *staying* consistent. Once some pronunciations change in different directions, it's inconsistent again and all that's happened is that the spelling no longer reflects the history of the word. So some information has been lost.

I like spellings that tell me more than just "the" pronunciation.
