NetHack 5.0.0 was recently released. NetHack 3.6.0 was released in 2015 so this is a big event for people who play this. Official DOS binary provided as usual:
LLMs have become technology that has failed to deliver on its promises the most since Pentium 4.
Failure of Pentium 4 however didn't put a loaded gun pointing at the head of the working class as failed CPU microarchitecture is incapable of destroying the economy as it didn't have USD 2 trillion of CapEx depending on its success.
Same 10 % hallucination rate despite how much we throw data and compute on these transformer models. Holy fuck we're in trouble.
Last Drop: An upcoming RPG based on Finland in 1994, when the country was in deep economic recession. Seems awesome. 😁 (31 min)
Maxis came into 1994 riding high on the wings of SimCity 2000, the hit of the previous holiday season. They followed up that success with… SimHealth: The National Health Care Simulation. This may sound like satire, but it was all too real.

This all seems kinda funny when rich people get burned but the fun stops when you learn that South Korea's KOSPI crash that resulted from announcement that China's CXMT is starting memory production on China sovereign DUV machines has resulted in crisis hotlines being overloaded across South Korea as people are killing themselves as they're getting margin called due to leveraged financial instruments.
The amount of financial carnage as this goes tits up is going to be of biblical proportions.
I miss this aesthetic in software.
ADSL's Copper Miracle: How the telecom industry turned the doomed copper telephone wire into a usable asset with an asymmetric transmission profile and discrete multitone modulation, which provided the early fast (by 2000 standards) always-on Internet connection. (31 min)
AI profiteers that I know about:
Nvidia, AMD (GPUs)
TSMC (chip fabrication plants)
ASML (EUV and DUV machines for fabs)
Data centre builders
Arista Networks (routers and Arista EOS)
Ciena, Nokia (fibre campus and metro networks, data centre interconnects)
Broadcom (inference ASICs)
SK Hynix, Micron, Samsung (memory)
Chip in if you got anything else.
Since I already outed myself as a fan of SNK Neo Geo arcade system let's talk about the games.
One of most obscure games is also one of greatest games made for the system. The game is Super Dodge Ball (1996) by Technos Japan.
This was the last game by Technos Japan and only few hundred cartridges were made for Neo Geo MVS before they filed for bankruptcy due to economic crisis of 1990s Japan.
Thanks to emulation the ROM is widely available.
In the early 1990s, the most profitable game in the world wasn’t called Mario or Sonic, it was Street Fighter II. And yet, this game was born from a chain of accidents: a series of unbelievable coincidences, burned-out developers, bugs that somehow made it into the final build, a component shortage that reshuffled everything, and a creator who stumbled into the video game industry purely by chance while trying to become a journalist. Remember when computers weren't just devices... they were adventures?
The generation that grew up with MS-DOS didn't just play games — they learned how computers worked, solved problems without tutorials, and unknowingly helped shape the future of PC gaming.
Finland had one of the if not densest BBS networks in the world which meant that people migrating to the Internet had an idea that the network is a public good and shouldn't be monetised.
Not because of ideology but by being part of the BBS network that was run as a public good by its sysops and users who meaningfully contributed to its vitality.
The BBS list for Uusimaa region 09 and 019 area codes was still MASSIVE in 1998 because those communities didn't really migrate to the Internet.
The current LLM paradox boils down to this:
The AI companies like OpenAI have to subsidise the product because few people are willing to pay for the true cost of inference because the value created is not there, making them bleed money.
They can also demand users to pay for the true cost of inference which means few users can justify value created vs the cost of inference or Return on Investment (ROI).
Impeccable 35 mm film transfer. ❤️
@DOSBox_Staging 0.83.0 Release Candidate 1 has been released. I've been busy lately, so late announcement:

The British Empire collapsed with the Suez Crisis. I can see a pattern of how empires end on these systemically important shipping lanes.
Too bad these assholes didn't study history.
Guess you can't have a forever war next to a shipping lane that delivers 20% of global oil and 20% of global LNG.
How exactly does US presence in the Persian Gulf benefit so-called allies? What benefit does the petrodollar bring to the so-called allies?
