How much value is in a scientific paper that's not reproducible because it lacks the necessary information or a code release to reproduce it?

#Perseverance has achieved a major milestone on Mars. On Sol 2006 (Oct. 11, 2026), its odometer reached 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles), setting a new record for the farthest distance driven on another celestial body. Its engineering twin here on Earth even received a plaque from Guinness World Records celebrating the achievement.

The printer might read a refilled ink cartridge as "expired" after enough refills, and refuse to use the ink. Mine would. And don't get me started on the rejection of third party cartridges.

A sensible country would outlaw this behavior. We need adversarial interoperability.

Frodo: “Where am I, and what is the time?”

Gandalf: "In the House of Elrond, and it is ten oclock in the morning. It is the morning of October the twenty fourth, if you want to know.”

Happy Chapter: #ManyMeetings Day to all who celebrate!

RIP to the closed caption workforce, tossed aside by AI generated slop that can’t discern jargon, accents, idiom, slang and all the things that actual humans can understand and transcribe. I feel sorry for deaf people who use streaming services that use that garbage.

So, likely confirming many sceptics' view of the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has concluded that in its first nine months it has had no discernible positive impact on the flow of inappropriate & dangerous material reaching children via social media.

As many argued at the time (and as I became convinced of after discussions in my timeline) this was the wrong way to address what remains a serious social problem.

We need a much bigger stick to deal with BigTech!

So "ID required" laws for social media that compromise everyone's privacy due to data leaks and lock LGBTQ kids out of information have LITERALLY ZERO impact on safety?

Finally saw "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" (1983). After many years of trying to catch it as a rental, I finally just bought the DVD.

Very B movie. Very genre. Bit of Star Wars and a bit of Mad Max. Produced by Ivan Reitman, who is best known for "Ghostbusters", and part of Molly Ringwald's brief foray into low-budget sci-fi.

Although honestly, this doesn't look all that low-budget. More of a medium budget. It was fun.

what you are is not what you *say* you believe, but what you do

in such a way, "leftists" who spend their time wallowing in perfectionism and cynicism, and on that basis choosing to do nothing (not voting), are essentially just masturbating their ego. and supporting fascism in their inaction

they are fake leftists. empty outrage people

they have a psychological position: tweaking their self-regard

not an ideological position: advancing a set of beliefs through action

Rabid Donald and the GOP are cornered and have begun to hiss and spit.

“If you don’t use AI you’re going to get left behind.”

Gosh, I sure hope so. I see where you’re going and it sucks.

This video of dial-up modem sounds MUST be watched with subtitles. MUST. Thank me later :)

This instant "topokki" from HEB is not bad, but it is SO not the real thing. Just makes me want to get the real stuff from the restaurant.
