    and you must not be in material preview mode because it isn't a material

    recall that viewport display and rendered visuals are completely different; this is a topic in which that difference matters a lot. to make it render, you will also need to edit the shader and do something to make emissions happen; you may find it useful to add an attribute node for "heat".

    and you probably also want to go to the render properties and change the render engine to "cycles".

    this is all with regard to Blender 5.1, not any later version because, as of this writing, there isn't one. if you're reading this more than a year from now it's probably all irrelevant because everything has been renamed; sorry about that.

    there. we watched several dozen tutorial videos all of whose creators addressed us as "guys", and figured out which details, glossed over in less than a second each, were actually important. so you don't have to.
