And people are, like, "But it's history and if people don't know history they're doomed to repeat it"

MFers, we've had this place around for 80 years and we seem pretty fucking doomed to repeat it anyway!

IDK, Germany's actually held the line pretty well because they did the work to recognize Nazi historical sites as places of mass atrocities. The same was not done in the US with southern plantations.

It's true that education has not proven to be a panacea for bad character, but I still value Holocaust education.

Turning the plantations into some tourist aesthetic is horrendous, but probably itself a symptom of how many people took abolition as a personal attack that they want to undo 😑

@MaryAustinBooks That’s fine and it’s good that it’s gone. If anyone misses that museum they can always visit one of the concentration camp sites.

I can sympathize with the sentiment, but I wish whoever did this would have put that daring into direct action against current Nazis who are still harming people.

As for the site itself, I can't know for sure, never having been there. But my understanding is that it wasn't romanticized like southern plantations, in which case I would say it had value. Don't get me wrong, when Nottoway plantation burned, I cheered. But this site wasn't about erasing atrocities.

@MaryAustinBooks Like all of these sites, the Germans typically do a good job creating the appropriate historic context and I'm sure this was a very good museum. But there were certainly a lot of people going up there because they just wanted to see Hitler's old vacation place.

Fuck that. They can go look at one of the concentration camps. It is VERY educational and thoroughly clears up a lot of doubts about the historic truth of what the Nazis did.
