A vast network of concentration camps was set up by the colonial government in the immediate aftermath of the declaration. It is thought that as many as 450,000 people were subjected to forced labour. Large numbers were tortured to death.

In the 18 months after the declaration of the emergency, more than 6 million bombs were dropped on Kenya.

Around 300,000 Kenyans were murdered in 14 years.
