If you're not in one of the countries where eBay is legally required to notify you of your right to opt out of your data being used for AI training (European Economic Area, U.K., Switzerland, perhaps others), then eBay probably sent you a different email which doesn't mention that you can opt out.
However, you still can, at this page:

Book 76: The Collected Angers. A collection of Monteiro essays that from a couple of different places, mostly advice to designers especially younger, new-career ones. If you know the sort of writing he does, this is the short form version of it. There's some overlap because he's talking to different audiences (you'll read a couple of anecdotes twice) but it's strong, forceful and says things that need to be said about how to do the business part of design, from talking to clients to getting paid

Book 75: The Last Detective. This was recommended to me as a good detective series if I was looking for one. I liked the detective character--Peter Diamond, an old-school technology eschewing guy--but found the plot of this story a little basic at the beginning and convoluted at the end. It's from the nineties, so we don't have cell phones or really personal computers, just a lot of "working the problem." A good book for nighttime when it's helpful if stories are a bit dull.

It was more like graupel but I definitely saw snow outside this morning. #FirstSnow

Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. I've sorted out my car situation and now just have to do the endless twiddling of my car's settings so it's not doing things I don't want it to. I'm sure you can relate. One thing I don't want it to do is read email. Hope you have a good weekend adjusting things just the way you like them.

My sister was a bit concerned because the new soup she bought at the supermarket (and loved) was from a company with no Wikipedia page. I told her not to worry.

If BIPM can get rid of leap seconds in UTC, then the US should be able to abolish Daylight Savings Time.

Blog post: New to me, about the new-to-me car I got and how it has an onboard computer or whatever it's called (my first) and I am determined to defeat it.

It's been three years but I'm finally back to sending out my occasional Today in Librarian Tabs newsletter because I found a tool that was decent to use (EmailOctopus). If you were already signed up, you will have gotten it. If you'd like to sign up, there's a little box on my website where you can add your email address or you can read it on Medium. This is just my little accountability nudge to me to keep up with it. Been nice to hear from long-ago subscribers.

Book 74: Major Taylor. Taylor was the fastest bicycle racer in the early days of cycling. He was also Black and dealing with the post-Civil War era in the US with its rabid racists, some of them cyclists. Taylor was a Christian and opted often for a "turn the other cheek" approach, but not always. This book is about his early life and racing career, from his first to his last race, including a lot of international travel. It tells a great story about a fascinating man who should be better known.

Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. I'm in the unenviable position of looking at getting a new-to-me car and all the options are imperfect. I love my fifteen minute "city" but sometimes I do need to leave it. Into the weekend like vroom vroom and I never check email when I'm not at home.

Hey I'm doing one of those quote-tweet things for a thing I think is dumb.

But! It leads to an ancient internet comment that I think is entirely made for Mastodon, a story about the time my dad, in the waning age of mainframes, was working on a project to create an internet-connected bear, Poppet, which could tell your child stories pulled from a home server. In the 1990s.

From MetaFilter, where a guy my dad used to work with, coincidentally decided to tell it.

Always a great time when you get to talk about Foucault in a library talk. Notes and slides for my keynote talk "Community Counters Contempt" from FACRL (Florida Chapter of ACRL). They let me talk about what I wanted, so I talked about theories of power, fascism fatigue, Emily Drabinski, the importance of snacks, and the IWW.

This little game "Tears on a Touchscreen, An Interactive Tale About
Doing Emotional Tech Support Work" is the closest thing I've ever seen to representing the real sort of work I do at library drop-in time.

Book 73: Villain. Picking up where Hench left off, sort of a "What kind of person becomes a villain, and what motivates them to do evil things?" novel where the protagonist is the hench person to a villain named Leviathan who is partially insectoid. Things get complicated when he defeats his rival (in the last book) and loses a sense of purpose. Then they get somewhat involved. Then they fight the good guys. Not as good as the original (to relationship-angst for my tastes) but clever and fun.

Book 72: Wild Things, The Material Culture of Everyday Life. This was a big swing for me, the sort of book I would have devoured in college but not lately. It's a reprint of Attfield's book originally from 2000 with a bit of new material at the beginning and the end. She really looks into the theory of items after they've been purchased and as they get used, not just the design-y aspect of them. In fact it's a lot more about everyday items than "high style" ones. A dense read but a good one.

Book 71: This is a problematic series of books that I nonetheless continue to read because I like the characters and the author, very wisely, has moved on from it mainly being about the Israeli secret services. This episode was about a billionaire whose wife is kidnapped (or is she?) and about some Russian oligarchs who may or may not be behind it all. A fairly pat book (I was expecting nothing more) and slightly better than usual though I could have done with some more art restoration.

Banned Books Week this year is one of those "May you live in interesting times" curses. It used to be we'd talk about Tropic of Cancer or Catcher in the Rye other books from olden times and now we can talk about Gender Queer or Last Night at the Telegraph Club and other books banned by some states literally this year. Thanks, I hate it.

Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. I know I should be doing something with my garden probably, but what? We've got peak foliage and the rains which are going to wash it all away. I shall supervise, and leave my emails until stick season. Have a good weekend.

In under the wire! There's precious little available online about the Female Parasol and Umbrella Makers' Union of New York but they had a big strike and got all up in Bambergers' face about attempting to hire scabs. Plus they maybe had wild parties. I consolidated what I found.
