Beginning to think that the Information Security profession needs to start seriously advocating that everyone invest in some form of secure, recoverable password keeping in case of death or disability. (1/3)
I’m still trying to understand and get into my late wife’s accounts. I have a laptop I am trying to crack to get information for a stroke victim who can’t remember details. We need to advocate strongly for people not to ignore this because you just don’t know when something may go wrong with you, and that your loved ones then struggle with recovering access.

and it goes further (for some atleast) - the whole home network,without me...is a problem.
Selfhosting is cool and all... but what happens when the "self" is not there??
@fuzzface it sounds very reasonable.... until I remembered that if you can crack it, so can other threat actors 😬
@crystalmoon A password notebook locked up somewhere where authorized users can get to it later would suffice, and would avoid the technology issue.
@crystalmoon As for the machines I am working on, I have them in my possession and authorization from the owner. That is way different from a remote attack. I’d prefer to not be doing this.

I have a family-shared set of passwords for key accounts, plus the secrets necessary to unlock my private passwords. My document attempts to list everything I think they'll need to know (cancel) when I'm gone.
Yeah, this is really important.

@fuzzface That should be a standard part of estate planning. I'm not an infosec professional, but I've done that! 😀
