every time I hear how Platner's carefully crafted "working guy" image was a huge part of his attractiveness as a candidate, I think about how AOC working as a bartender was proof she was "too stupid" to be a member of congress

Ignorant people full of prejudices will keep voting for fascists because that's what they've done all their lives, and propaganda is there, hammering on their heads 24/7 thanks to corporate interests.

How can we break that? What can we do that we haven't tried before?

Maybe try putting some more women in office, just to see what happens? Can't be worse than what we men have accomplished…

@chrisp unless she's a woman, then obviously (to many) that's just what women are (not smart enough for politics)

People take it as given that Trump's obvious stupidity is a hindrance... and it's obviously NOT but also, it's integral to his success. A lot of white male supremacy hinges on IMPUNITY.

He can be the *literal stupidest* man on the planet and he's better to have for a leader than a woman because MALE. And WHITE.

Fascists revel in their lack of quals & intrinsic "right to rule"

@susankayequinn If AOC had ever publicly said anything half as demeaning about straight white men (even while having a long-term partner who is one) as Platner has posted on public social media about virtually every demographic but straight white men, she probably wouldn't have been able to get hired as a bartender.

@susankayequinn what I hope is one take-away from this is that there is real desire in Maine for the *policies* put forward, even if the candidate was deeply flawed. find someone else willing to push those same policies, minus the war-mongering to increase military spending, and try again. it's been shown to be widely popular, do it again

maybe, just maybe, voting for policy over people is a slightly better approach. maybe we should do away with politicians altogether
