Best guess is new neighbors put down lawn chemicals when they moved in. A guy who used to run a nursery told me this kills the larvae. The neighbors stopped doing that so we are seeing a slow buildup in firefly numbers the last couple years. But it will be a while before they come back to what they used to be, I think.
