My legend as heard or read regarding the naming of the loo goes as follows.

In streets of Paris, when the water closet was but a humble chamber pot, when contents were defenestrated from the upstairs bedroom to rid it from one’s home or shop, one cried the phrase ‘Gardez ‘leau’ (watch the water).

Which is why I like to hear the ‘Room 100’ story, as I forget it as non-canon.
