Excellent reporting from APTN. These two opening paragraphs:
With Alberta’s promise to fully respect “Canada’s duty to consult with Indigenous Peoples,” as part of its promised July 1 submission on a new bitumen pipeline to the Major Projects Office, the province isn’t revealing which First Nations have been consulted.
Information provided by Alberta’s Ministry of Indigenous Relations said it’s not providing a list of specific communities in the interest of “open and honest participation.”
which is about as dryly sarcastic and critical as a purely factual report can be.

And what, from the economic perspective, is the point?
the ocean-based B.C. economy at $21 billion annually with over 130,000 full-time jobs.
so we're talking about spending billions of taxpayer dollars to endanger an $21 billion/year economy.

@datum At all of the west coast ports considered their passageways all have depths shallower (controlling depth) than the draft (how deep a ship floats) of tankers. To argue that the shipping poses no risk is meaningless political noise

@pinhman Yes - when they talk about dredging the Burrard Inlet, I feel like average Canadians don't quite have a good idea of the sheer volume of material that means.
I skimmed a piece by a hydrogeologist who said that the kind of coastal silt and clay around BC's coast means every one of these proposals has serious engineering risks, including underwater land slides.

@datum The Roberts Banks ports currently have controlling depths of 22.7 & 20.7 meters
The smaller of the ocean going tankers, the Aframax class has a draft of 20 m, but all ships need additional clearance margin
