    @stephan Thank you, especially for your thoughts about using one's being different to convey a certain image and market one's art - or, conversely, feeling unwilling and unable to do just that. It puts into words something I have been wondering about (and often felt a bit uncomfortable about) recently.

    @Ardeija

    Thank you. I have given this a lot of thought, not least because of the success of "Strategies Against Architecture", a big part of which could be attributed to "successful marketing campaign" – which it wasn't. It was never intended as such. But in the end that's what it was. And I strongly feel that in an open and inclusive environment, it should be possible to discover art without marketing.

    @stephan thanks for the article! Lots of interesting ideas in the context of @jamcoop (which I work on). I never used GB, do I understand you that it only allowed you to upload music if you'd already listened to and shared your thoughts on someone else's music?

    @chrislowis

    Yes, exactly, and I feel this element was absolute key.

    People are still listening to my music today because they discovered it on Garageband so many years ago.

    I realise that this may seem counterproductive to the aim of selling as much as possible. But I strongly feel that the connection this can create between artists and listeners, and/or between artists themselves, is as profound as I believe it has not been achieved since then.

    @stephan @chrislowis @jamcoop

    I think this loss of connection is a key topic. Not only between artists and listeners.

    But in life entirely.

    Everything is more superficial. If you're not easy to handle like an app, most prominently, if you're not on WhatsApp, you're not worth being a friend.

    Many people have the fear of missing out, petting their handheld devices constantly, but also constantly missing out time with friends and family, and… music.

    Relationship is not a digital thing. It's not an identical ID in two database tables. It's something inside humans that takes time to grow.

    @chrislowis @jamcoop

    (btw, the Mirlo folks had also previously expressed an interest in this sort of feature, but after I followed up with them, I didn’t hear anything back. So… just sayin…, here would be your chance to *differentiate yourself in the marketplace*, as it were… and, of course, have my lasting gratitude and enthusiastic support)

    @stephan @jamcoop We're trying to root ourselves more in local music scenes - we've been talking to some grassroots venues and artists here in London, for example. The community stuff is really important, particularly as we hope to be a democratic org.

    @stephan @jamcoop Although we're not trying to "sell as much as possible", we do also want to be sustainable and be able to look after our workers too. The costs of running the platform are not small sadly, and there's also tougher regulation to deal with (like the online safety act, payment services directive) that makes things quite a lot harder than it was in the comparatively less-regulated Garageband days.

    @stephan @jamcoop sorry, lost a bit in my ham-fisted copy-pasting! Your ideas are really interesting and I'd love to explore with you whether we could try any of them out on jam!

    @stephan @chrislowis @jamcoop chiming in to say that the same thing happened to me using gb.com. Made new connections, discovered new music, found new listeners, got some lovely (and a couple of scathing) reviews. It was a great system and I miss it too.

    @stephan thank you for sharing, I’m thinking a lot about this too. Never heard of garageband, but it sounds great, maybe something with similar goals grows from the fediverse.

    @stephan Yes - that but also reminds me of the Twitter/X shutdown and layoffs: The world needs people ready and willing to actually spend their time, dedication and money too on alternative, sustainable services and solutions. Looking at things such as the Bandcamp scenario, I mean, it could be quite obvious: There are skilled, experienced developers suddenly free to do work. Where are the alternative services, projects, "products", ..., to give those a new home, a new chance, a new employment to maybe build new solutions for communities, artists, ... or improve, grow existing ones? "We" are pretty much missing out on organization, structure, structured project planning here. And AI and LLM coding is making this even worse. 😔

    @stephan I've had the idea of a website that let you discover local bands, create playlists and lists gigs. Something like Backstagepro but for consuming music, not finding other artists. I actually have the domain already, but never find the time to write or host the website...
