"Mentions" are where someone's account address (also known as their Fediverse address or their handle) is included in a post. When someone is mentioned, it notifies them so they can look at the post where they are mentioned.

You can usually mention someone by typing @ and then the first part of their account address. Here's a guide to using mentions on Mastodon:
