1028 died in Spain, in one month, due to capitalist-created #canicule hitting Europe this summer.
Europe has 50 countries. 27 of those countries are in the European Union.
let’s use Spain as a baseline and low-ball the number down to 1000. that means that anywhere between 27 to 50,000 europeans might have been killed IN ONE MONTH by the #petromafia #climateCrisis

@blogdiva I read there is 1% excess deaths just in the EU during the most recent heatwave. France had ~10% excess deaths.

@blogdiva a reasonable estimate imo, see France: https://www.livemint.com/news/world/heat-wave-france-sees-over-1-000-excess-deaths-as-europe-swelters-under-record-temperatures-11782633666440.html it might be even worse in Turkey, Greece but the data comes in slower from there. Extrapolating from this, I guess turkey could hit 3k this time around: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6887774/
But a lot of countries, like Sweden, or Malta will be much lower for various reasons. A lot of these types of deaths are preventable by reducing inequality and prioritizing mitigations like urban shade, healthcare and education. Europe is more than rich enough to take care of our people if we stop focusing on capitalism, fascism, and football like a bunch of idiots.
I am much more worried about the global south in the long term 😨

@blogdiva and Numbers in Spain are far better cause of 2 factors: people in Spain are physically more resilient to heat (we are used to it) and also most of households are more or less prepared for the heat in summer (fans/air conditioning + blinds in the windows + awnings ). It is being a disaster for northern countries and UK.
