In 2017 wildlife photographer Mohammed Almuntasir posted a YouTube video of the nocturnal feline in the Libyan Sahara, much to the surprise of naturalists, who hadn’t known it was there. Now, after eight years of research in a remote valley, the sand cat has been documented in 13 sites. Smaller (and arguably cuter) than a house cat, the sand cat is difficult to spot, but can be tracked through its pawprints.
