    @danish_akhtar7 iPhone out competed any other name, and it was too obvious a step from there to "phone" for "palmtop" to feel like the right thing to say?

    I dunno, just guessing.

    @discobeez @danish_akhtar7 maybe the original phone was an instrument of communication. The new "hand held device" usually called a phone is an instrument of consumerism and ongoing colonisation, in its many forms, as such we were conned by language into thinking it was a service to the majority.

    @danish_akhtar7 The first smartphones were still primarily phones, for calling and texting but also they could do these other things. It was a gradual transition to undeniably be handheld computers.
