    @jwz There was a bar owner in Calgary in the mid 2000s that had a bunch of bars and started scanning patron drivers licenses to get in. They admitted they stored the info and claimed they needed to put it place to deal with a rash of patron and gang violence that was happening.

    At least, that's my vague recollection.

    I wonder if this is an outgrowth of that.
