Smile/nod/say hello to cleaning staff. Hold the door for them if they're pushing or carrying something heavy. Treat people like people, because they are.

I also try to be very generous with garbage collectors, and not let myself get frustrated by the extra five minutes of waiting if I get caught behind a truck, because their job in particular is difficult and dangerous and so necessary.
