When my hair started thinning on top, I could have opted for a combover... if I'd been silly enough to think it would a) look good or b) fool anyone.

I wasn't that silly. I shaved it instead.

I don't find the use of "combover" as an insult offensive at all. As @CStamp rightly points out, it's a fashion choice. And criticizing and even insulting people for their *choices* is fine.
