Even before then, I was the leader in my gang of mostly boys as a young one, @pathfinder . (There were two other girls, and six boys). I would take us on adventures through local swamps, and unfamiliar woods. We once got lost in a snowstorm, but I navigated the way back home (and we all survived). We were an adventurous little group!

I think, even back then, that up to a certain age it's never about the gender, but who has the best ideas of what we would be "fun". Thinking back though, it was a minor miracle that many of us survived the seventies, the things we got up with. The joys of being expected to go out and make our own entertainment. I just have to hope that our parents simply forgot somehow what that could mean. Although, I was never a leader. More just grateful, in my lone wolf ways, to be accepted by my friends.
