    The other thing is that real excellence in software dev is almost entirely non existent, EXCEPT in open source.

    It's always been pretty well known in the industry that what you really want is a very small elite team of THE BEST people you can find. And AI has made it even more so, because a really good developer can have an AI do mundane stuff like write unit tests, and the dev can know at a glance if it's code is okay.

    But ever since Java, or even COBOL, these companies have been trying to create "software factories" filled with low skill, low agency workers. And they ALWAYS end up making awful codebases that cannot be maintained and eventually end up getting scrapped.

    Circle of life I guess...
