They say spec fiction isn't really much good at predicting the future. Better at commenting on the present, slantwise.

Two counterexamples that hit hard today:

Robert A. Heinlein's "If This Goes On—" / "Revolt in 2100," where a televangelist rules a Christofascist U.S. dystopia.

Octavia Butler's "Earthseed" books, where a fascist president terrorizes a climate-ravaged hellscape while promising to "Make America Great Again."
