A side benefit of using sandboxes is that I can using graphene-hardened_malloc at the system level and give buggy apps a sandboxed glibc.

Sadly that list currently includes mullvad browser and sandboxing Firefox is a whole thing since it has its own internal sandbox.

The struggle as always is creating effective profiles. That's why flatpak gets a bad rep. Its very likely that Agua will easily surpass the stock Linux stuff in terms of playing nice with sandboxes.

I'm also quite excited about the flexibility of user space networking (pasta) to do interesting things with mesh networking simulations and composing 9-like services in sandboxed namespaces.

I'm using nixwrap to save some work for the initial draft. There are some issues there, but they seem fixable. Despite the current module layout, sandboxes will not be enabled by default until I'm happy with the security model. bwrap is a nice tool, but you can't apply it haphazardly and expect it to do a good job.

I think the design here is quite nice. I've largely ripped off the firejail module, except that Tierra uses programs.<name>.package as the wrapper input + a sandbox profile. This gives us a clear definition of which programs are enabled, and allows overrides and customization to be applied as usual. security.app-sandbox "just" applies a wrapper which enforces the rules defined in the apps profile. Using some #nix meta rules to override the bin path.

I am trying to be picky about apps so its easier to properly contain everything. Well see how well that works.

I'm an android or cyborg in the sense that i can't function in capitalist hell society without a computer to help me calculate exactly which bullshit I have to deal with on which day. I also use computer to keep track of those special numbers that decide how much dignity I'm allowed to have.

I love a small, well crafted operating system. But I'll be damned if I do anything *because of* AI or any other random nonsense that pops us. Being reactive doesn't lead to any kind of good or interesting place. I'm gonna sit here and I'm going to keep reflecting on the kinda shit I want to see in a computer.

I'm gonna keep learning and trying to be a better human and a better activist. I want to make the world better as much as possible and running away from the obvious boogeyman (LLMs taking your jobs and diluting the concept of IP so art doesn't pay as well) can't help with that. The issue here is obviously our lack of agency relative to the super-rich, not machine learning.

I'm not pro AI by any means, but the whole AI is/has cooties complaining threads thing is getting old. Post about stuff you're doing pls and thx 😊

Finally got around to making my posts page gemini sub compliant. This marks the first time I'm using a full size programming language for my static site generator in a long time. And my first time doing so from scratch!

Not to dunk on 9 rc and ish too much, I had a lot of fun generating gemtext using only 9 coreutils and their infernal counterparts. #theWorkshop

I went with Plasma as the default desktop because its pretty complete and comfy and this is for my gf. Eventually when Agua is mature enough, I'll export a module that gives you the option to run a smol desktop session in place of Plasma.

and yes, Agua will have integrated support for Merveillian tech.
