I hesitated to post this because I know that there are a lot of people out there who aren't in a life situation where they could choose to see getting fired as a positive thing, but the psychological whiplash I went through yesterday was too funny not to share.

This was actually my second time going through this kind of thing. The previous time I was 5 minutes to freedom when it got yanked away.

When the dot-com bubble burst, I was at a startup company. I had until 2pm by the end of the week to land a new role or I'd be cut.

My friends were already gone. I came to accept my fate as the week wore on. By Friday, I was looking forward to it.

I had heard nothing by 1pm. I counted the minutes. By 1:30pm, still nothing.

1:50pm. I start counting the seconds. I think of how I want to say goodbye. I feel great.

1:55pm. My phone rings.

I send it to voicemail as fast as I can, but they immediately call back.

I was informed by a key client that it looked like I had been let go by them. This came as a total shock because there was absolutely no warning. They had actually just asked for a new project that I was dreading.

After the shock wore off, I realized for the first time in many years, financial security be damned, I would have a lot more freedom to do whatever I wanted.

Within hours, I already had an idea of what the next 3-6 months would look like. The future might eventually deliver regret, but for now, I could choose to fear this or embrace it.

I chose the latter. It was exhilarating.

I sit down at my computer and open my email. Uh, nevermind! I didn't get fired. It was just a paperwork error that caused a system glitch.

Well, so much for being high on having "nothing left to lose". Now I had a deadline to chase again. NGL, it was sooooo hard to find the motivation to get started.

Yeah. It was a #conspiracy to fix prices. Emails between each other writing down the damn conspiracy. They made billions. Guess how much they have to pay in fines? If you guessed less than 1%, you’ve been paying attention to the #kakistocracy.

Day 2 of “you must write all code with AI” mandate:

Underrated reason to have proper SPF setup for all of your hosted domain names to hard fail improper sending routes... when you forget to turn off the mail sender on your dev server and you run a batch action that sends out tens of thousands of emails to users.

I saw my inbox fill up with thousands of email notifications since a lot of the notifications were sent to me. The only reason I'm not panicking is because I looked at the mail headers and saw that because the emails were sent from my computer instead of my server, they failed both SPF and DKIM verification checks so any damage should be limited.

Ugh. 😓
