I like X11. I like Motif. I like the way we used to do shit on Unix. We didn't need 128GB of RAM to run a browser. We didn't need 3D acceleration to run a desktop environment. We weren't afraid of a C compiler, we didn't need an IDE.
30 years ago, HoTMaiL launched on July 4, 1996, helping make web-based email feel normal.
This 1996 homepage said it was already “over 500,000 users strong.” Today, it is a reminder of how simple the early internet looked before inboxes became identity, work, security, and our entire digital lives.
Of all the programming languages that I had to learn over the years, my favourite is still Pascal. Many programmers hate Pascal because it has such a rigid structure, but my Pascal code has much fewer bugs than anything I write in any other language, exactly because that rigid structure keeps me from making a lot of stupid mistakes.
