I knew macOS was dropping support for Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) network backups, but I finally ran into it. Guess I'll shut down my ancient Synology at last.

Code reviewing was never the most interesting thing to do. But it had one important element. That, if done right, it was knowledge exchange between the reviewer and the coder. That can be quite motivating. Helping a fellow coder to become better. Reviewing "AI" written code does NOT come with that potential reward. The machine doesn't learn the way a human does. This turns code review into a menial, fruitless task that leads to frustration instead. That's my observation and opinion.

I finally got macOS Golden Gate 27 running in a virtual machine using UTM, following the included directions. The site does a decent job of explaining the issue. I ended up going with Workaround 2, but unfortunately the InstallAssistant.pkg link was for Beta 1 and I still can't turn on beta downloads in Software Update for some unknown reason.

I can always download a newer version of InstallAssistant.pkg, but I've already downloaded about 1 TB of data to get this far.

Having zero luck getting macOS Golden Gate 27 running in a UTM virtual machine. Install errors out when trying to create VM from the ipsw image.

I do have a current Tahoe VM running, but it doesn't show me the beta updates toggle in Software Update.

I have a Thunderbolt NVMe RAID box that was having occasional odd errors, like disks vanishing or write errors (never the same NVMe drive).

I happen to have an identical duplicate system that never has that issue, so I swapped Thunderbolt cables and the problem showed up on the alternate system. It's a marginal cable! But yay, easy and inexpensive part to replace.

Unexpected consequence of the AI era*: Various tools with network calls that normally would run so quickly there is no need for a progress bar or status indicator now hang for minutes at a time trying to reach network with no sign of whether the tool has locked up

* Here "AI" means "various commercial entities are performing a DDOS on every website, but there are no legal consequences, because if you call something 'AI' it becomes legal, like doing it through a hole in a sheet"
