Here's a #MathsPuzzle / #MathPuzzle I pondered a while back.

Modify the 8-queens problem so that queens are black or white, and rule that it's OK for _same-colour_ queens to be in line – they didn't want to capture each other anyway.

So, how many queens can you place on a chessboard such that:

1. no queen attacks an opposite-coloured one
2. the number of black and white queens differ by at most 1. (Excludes boring answers like 64)

This layout of 16 was my first try, but it's not the best.
