One coding blunder I see LLMs make over and over is that rather than just attempting create a file and handling the potential for an “already exists” error they check for the existence of the file before attempting to create it. If asked, they can explain why this is wrong, but over and over again they will write this anti-pattern anyway because they don’t think and they don’t learn. They just parrot, and what they have to parrot is crap, and it makes me think: Dear lord if the overwhelming majority of my alleged peers is this dumb then no wonder software is so awful and management hates us and wants to replace us with bags of words.

I laugh to keep from crying when normies are baffled by software people’s utter loathing of printers.

Of course, we were just bouncing back from the Nixon era and Watergate. But the economy was strong, technology still felt like it was pushing forward, and the music was upbeat disco.

It still felt like we'd just gone to the Moon, and we successfully softlanded Viking 1 on Mars that year (almost on the bicentennial -- it was delayed to July 20th, making it the anniversary of the Moon Landing instead).

This time, I don't even know what we're celebrating. Feels like the country has been trashed.

The electoral college is the original sin against the idea of the people governing ourselves. It opened the door to these greater perversions of the system. I’ve heard moderate and even “left-leaning” people defend the idea that systems like the Senate, districting and the EC are fair because “otherwise big cities and states would dominate too much” but who decides what is too much?
