So Parnas’ newsletter reports this morning that there are witnesses who report Mitch on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance (no surprise there), and that emergency responders were not in a hurry and did not leave with sirens on. There are two possible reasons for that… either the incident is trivial enough that there’s no need, or it’s bad enough that there’s no use. If it were trivial, he’d be out of the hospital in an hour or a day. I’d bet however that he was dead when they got to him.

Get fucked, insurance company. Here’s your reminder that, if you’re a California resident, and your health insurance refuses to cover something, it takes all of 5 minutes to file an independent medical review with the state, and statistically, 73% of the time the state will make your insurer pay.

That’s an insane amount! That is a lot of people getting screwed over, and that’s only the people who reported it who got compensation! And there are people who work for the state who take extreme joy in taking administrative action and fining insurance companies – so far this year, California insurance companies have already been fined $19.7 million, and those are not ‘medical loss’ numbers that count towards the amount of profit they’re allowed to make.

So do those people at the state a solid. You don’t have to be a green Nintendo plumber to make insurers pay; you can make a difference from your desk. If your insurance company causes you trouble, spend the five minutes to file with the DMHC helpline.

This year, my insurance plan just decided not to cover a normal preventative lipid and A1C panel for my annual physical, leaving me with a $200 bill from Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The state decided my insurance should pay it after all, and it’ll go into the file to see if they have a pattern of doing this. Blue Shield, get fucked.

My previous book, Technofascism Survival Guide, had a very successful Kickstarter campaign. I raised $ 12,928 Canadian out of my $2,700 Canadian goal. I finished writing that book recently, and all my backers got their eBooks and other campaign rewards fulfilled, as of July 1st.

Unfortunately, due to the immense damage Gen AI has done to my career, at the moment my Kickstarter funded books are pretty much my only source of income. I know a lot of people are hypocrites, so I must reiterate that I take pride in doing 100% of my own writing, and I do research the way research has always been done prior to 2020. It would disgust me to use Gen AI in any way whatsoever. The cover art for Recovering After Gen AI was also 100% human made, by my friend Cory Gerard.

My thesis is that Gen AI will end, soon. Soon, as in, probably not beyond 2027. It cannot keep going, because:

The financial bubble will pop.

The Gen AI datacentre boom is unsustainable according to the laws of physics. I cite Harvard Science Review, MIT, and a United Nations report in my Kickstarter campaign page to back that up.

Model collapse, a computer science phenomenon where Gen AI or machine learning data gets corrupted when feeding upon other Gen AI vomited data, is another reason why Gen AI is unsustainable in the long term. And my campaign has scientific citations for that, too.

So my book is about dealing with the aftermath of Gen AI. Because even though it cant keep going for much longer, it’s causing so much harm to peoples psyches, livelihoods, and the planet. And there will be a ton of damage that we’ll need to recover from.

I understand that some of my fellow vets may not share my admiration for Major Watson's action. Senator and retired Captain Mark Kelly has exactly the same free speech rights as any civilian, unless and until he's recalled to active duty. Maj. Watson, a currently serving officer, does not.

He is committing a crime specific to officers, speaking "contemptuous words" against the president. (Not that things would go much better for enlisted who did the same.) He will almost surely lose his commission and be dismissed from the service, possibly with prison time along the way. And I'm quite sure he knew this when he made that sign and went up those steps.

Most laws should be followed, most of the time. Some laws are unjust, and should be broken all the time. Some other laws are not unjust in and of themselves, but can be used as vehicles for injustice, and should be broken when they are. That last is clearly where we are now, and Maj. Watson is a hero—a word I don't use lightly—for recognizing and acting on it.
