In the US as in every western democracy, the non-college whites are the ones who want blood-and-soil nationalism & authoritarianism. The founding precepts of the US, as laid out in the Declaration of Independence, have always been an elite project. That fact is awkward for all factions so we 🤫
You can see this short-circuiting a lot of the elite reflections on our grim 250th birthday. The Real Americans have taken control of gov't and they are using it to destroy America. You can't say "we need to return to heartland values" in this context. Heartland values are in control now!
There's a simple fact that no one in US politics is allowed to acknowledge publicly: the demographics most likely to play the role of Real Americans in the elite imagination are the least likely to support the core American value of pluralism. The most American are the least American.

A group of white supremacists marching with Confederate flags in Washington DC on July 4 is bad.
Those white supremacists no longer feeling like they have to hide their faces while they march to avoid social consequences (eg losing their job) would be worse.
