You gather your most expensive people into a room to make your most important decisions. Then, somewhere in the second hour, the room quietly gets worse at making them. Not the people. The room.

I now travel with a portable CO2 monitor. Outdoors it reads around 400 parts per million. In a closed meeting room with a handful of people in it, I have watched it climb past 2,000. The photo here is a real reading: 2,143.

That number matters more than it looks. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory put people in a chamber and varied only the CO2. At 1,000 ppm, performance dropped significantly on six of nine decision-making measures compared with a clean-air baseline of 600. At 2,500 ppm, seven of the nine fell substantially, some into a range they called dysfunctional. A separate study out of Harvard found cognitive scores declining as CO2 rose, with the steepest losses in exactly the domains you called the meeting for: strategy, planning, and using information under pressure.

I distinctly remember that my edition of Encarta (they released a new one every year for a while) would play a recording of Martin Luther King Jr saying “I have a dream” at bootup. GOG is giving away Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, a fleet command RTS from the early 2000s that I recall enjoying... but for the life of me, I can't remember any specific gameplay moments from.

To the person who suggested putting an emergency mylar blanket over the window (my apologies, can't find you comment anymore), wow that worked well. The indoor temp dropped 4C in 15 minutes, and that was with no direct light aimed at the window. I'm surprised that extent of solar energy was coming through. Nice hack, and one that is easy/cheap to do.

Edited to add: I always thought those blankets are opaque, so expected the effect to be like a blackout curtain. But it turned out they are more like a tinted car window. The amount of light is notably reduced, and the residual light bleeds through with an orange tint. But when there's light outside as backlight, the view across the street is still clear and detailed -- just darker. At night it's effectively opaque. (Though don't make any assumptions re privacy since now the interior is what would be backlit.)

I have been organizing my 3d miniature models I've purchased or received as Patreon rewards. Over 70GB unpacked, I can't keep all of them on my hard drive.

I have written 600 lines of bash and Perl code across 11 management scripts. I have metadata, and a management scheme to keep working files and preview images on my local disk while the already-80GB+ archive is on a 10TB spinner hanging off the backup server.

And the repository is so much easier to manage now.

I was watching a video by Caitlin Doughty about John Wilkes Booth and some of the conspiracy theories about his body and death. And the Nonsense went on right into 1903 a date that caught my eye since it was when my grandmother was born.

And this made me think about how much can change in a lifetime.

When my grandmother was a toddler people were still "getting over" the Civil War and its aftermath. When she died there was a Black president.

Also, the US has always been full of nonsense.

I ported @foone's VGAPride, a lovely, MS-DOS program whose whole job is drawing pride flags — to run natively on Mac OS 9 on PowerPC.

The flags turned out to be *data*, not code, so most of the port was one wee QuickDraw shim. Built with Retro68, complete with a flag selector, and it runs on my actual G3 iBook. Alice's sunglasses-wearing crab made it across intact. 🦀
