A couple months ago I posted a clip of an app I made just for myself, and a bunch of you said “please release this.” So I did!

Cava Reader is an ebook + audiobook reader for Android. You load an EPUB and its audiobook, and it highlights each word as the narrator says it, karaoke style. The speech recognition runs on your phone, so it all works offline.

I made it because my brain wanders. When the words light up I never lose my place, and if I zone out for a second I just look back and the highlight is right there. (Same reason I always record my blog posts and post them next to the text. Friends with ADHD got me into that habit.)

also I made this video myself, and I’m way too proud of the little piano sync at the end lol

No account, no ads, your books never leave your device. There’s also a built-in library of 37 public domain classics you can read along with for free.

Reading and listening are free, read along on the classics is free, and read along on your own books is free for the first 4 hours. After that it’s a one-time $9.99 for the Full app. No subscription.

This is my first closed-source project and the first thing I’ve ever charged for. It’s the most effort I’ve ever put into anything, and it might be what finally stops me from dipping into my savings to keep Altbot running. If you do buy Full, thank you :)

Google Play, or APK / Obtainium: cavareader.app

Android only for now (sorry iOS folks, I don’t own a single Apple device to test on 😅 (for now… coming soon TM??))

A video of Cava Reader, a eBook+audiobook synced reader app. A phone screen appears on the right with large text on the left. Upbeat instrumental music plays throughout, with narration.

The video opens with “Read or listen? Why choose?” The phone shows Pride and Prejudice with words highlighted one at a time as they’re read aloud. Next, “Read along. Every word, right on cue.” continues the highlighting. “Listen. Just the narration.” shows the book cover and an audio waveform. “Read. Just you and the words.” shows plain scrolling text.

“37 classics. Yours, free. Read along included.” shows a scrolling grid of classic book covers. “Bring your own books. Your EPUB. Your audiobook. Together.” shows a book being added to the shelf. “Fullscreen. Nothing else. Just your book.” shows text filling the whole screen, as the phone frame fades out.

“Your fonts. Your themes.” shows the reading screen switching between light, dark, and colored themes and different fonts, with each change cut on the beat of the piano in the music.

The video ends on the Cava Reader logo with “Read, listen, or both at once. Free to start. Full: $9.99 once. Read along on your own books. cavareader.app.”

the app sends a few anonymous numbers to my own server (minutes of read along used, downloads finishing, whether it crashed, only that it did, no crash logs) so I know when something’s broken, especially since a lot of you are installing outside Google Play. Nothing about your books, no IPs, no ID tied to you, gone after 90 days. I read way too many 80-page legal documents to make it all GDPR compliant.

Oh and its GDPR compliant worldwide, because privacy shouldn’t depend on you being in the EU, it should just be a human right.
