@chadmccullough @netbsd if you wrote the stick with dd, make sure that it was written to the device (e.g. sdb) and not partition (e.g. sdb1). I've had this by accident on one of these days when brain is tired
I'm really struggling to get @netbsd installed on my ThinkPad T14 laptop. I can't get the install to even start. I've included a photo of what I'm seeing right after I start the install. I know that I'm doing something wrong, but just can't figure out what that might be. So, NetBSD is a bit different than Linux, huh? 😂
Thanks for any help you can give. I didn't seem this issue when installing on the desktop.
@maxime_andre yeah, for unknown (by me) reasons, installing #NetBSD over an existing UEFI installed system always failed at the makefs step. I always have to use the "wipe all and start from scratch" installer option.
@subnetspider download sets from daily: https://nycdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/
update kernel first (gunzip netbsd-GENERIZ.gz, mv /onetbsd /netbsd, cp netbsd-GENERIC /netbsd; special instructions for rpi/arm), reboot
update all sets except etc
run postinstall/etcupdate on the etc tarball
or download the installer image from images/ and boot that, i suppose
Hey #NetBSD users,
can you share with a n00b how you keep your hosts patched and up to date?
I am used to use freebsd-update/pkgbase and have tried syspatch on OpenBSD once, but here I am completely clueless. 🫠
@M0CUV @kaveman @netbsd Make note of this section:
"First, install UTM from https://mac.getutm.app/ or https://github.com/utmapp/UTM/releases/tag/v4.5.4. (Note: the latest version of UTM that worked best for me was v4.5.4. Versions newer than that but before 4.7.5 lead to different errors; version 4.7.5 requires the "Display" to be set to virtio-gpu-pci. Alternatively, removing the Display and creating a new serial console device will work as well.)"
Sounds like maybe you ran into that problem?
crikey people. I know I _used_ to be a BSD and Mac sysadmin, back when I was saving up the money to turn into an academic, and learned how to use TeX in four Himalayan languages, and eventually became a real professor, and then not, and dumped Macs, and then became a gov't anthropologist, and I'm cleaning the Linux stains off everything now. So I kept the habit of running my own servers and all that, though with attitudes that are about 30 years out of date, and I would much rather learn a new script than scripting language these days. And I wrote and thought a lot about ethics, sentient beings, and technology along the way.
But seriously, I wake up and find that #NetBSD is now the only safe harbour? Whaaat? I really hope the idiots who are trying to poison FreeBSD go find their personal Epstein island or whatever they want really; it would be good to have a choice. Thank goodness for NetBSD at least but ungggh it's going to be a lot of work moving all the tools over.
@nina_kali_nina Let's try #NetBSD, virtual machine. Installation in progress. I knew Linux for 30 years, I never tried a BSD.
Men only please (women, please boost)
A woman you've never met before is walking past you and suddenly complains of chest pain, clutches her chest, goes down, loses consciousness. You establish she has no pulse.
Someone has fetched the AED
It has two pads that you need to position on her chest - one on her right side below the collar bone, the other on her left, just below her breast
(Please boost for coverage)
You will
First time I've actually installed #NetBSD on "real" hardware, until now I've only run it in VMs and on a Raspberry Pi 1.
So far configuring it differs a bit from FreeBSD, but commands like ifconfig, route, sockstat, top, and so on are almost identical, which makes it rather intuitive.
The host is online, the first few packages are installed, a service set up and running. Next I will take a look at the npf firewall, can't wait to see how it compares to OpenBSD/FreeBSD pf and learn it's own special features. :)
When it comes to BSD, I've only ever really used OpenBSD on servers, and the occasional time I'd fire up NetBSD on the Dreamcast.
If I were to dive into trying desktop BSD, which way would you go or have you gone? I haven't kept up, and honestly, from a desktop perspective, have zero idea of where to start, and it's high time I started expanding my knowledge to user-facing parts.
(Target machine, if viable, is a Dell XPS 13 9370 Developer Edition; the ones that shipped with Ubuntu by default.)
Thoughts, suggestions, guides, opinions welcome.
