Dudes. WTF is wrong with you?

A Reddit thread of IT/security people saying C-suiters are hyping AI but failing to do the security basics:

"Management was literally drooling over the shiny global threat map dashboard. Menwhile I’m sitting there biting my tongue because we still don't even have a functioning asset inventory."

Vale Margaret Hamilton.
She was a Software Engineer.
She was the _first_ Software Engineer because she defined the term, Software Engineering:
"When I first came up with the term, no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. It was a memorable day when one of the most respected hardware gurus explained to everyone in a meeting that he agreed with me that the process of building software should also be considered an engineering discipline, just like with hardware. Not because of his acceptance of the new 'term' per se, but because we had earned his and the acceptance of the others in the room as being in an engineering field in its own right."

Margaret Hamilton led the Software Engineering team at MIT that created the software that ran NASA's Apollo Guidance Computer. The photo of her standing next to a stack of source code printouts — that's her work, and she was essential to NASA's mission of landing people on the Moon for the first time ever and getting them back to Earth again safely.

any president who is actively calling for an attack on the country they serve should immediately be removed by force. i dont understand how everyone is calmly listening to a mad man openly asking an enemy country to murder nearly 6million people on our soil. the cabinet should be marching into his office to grab him by his rotten belt and toss him out of the white house 25th A style. congress should have an emergency session to immediately vote for impeach ment with an immediate trial and conviction.

the military is supposed to protect against all enemies former and domestic. how do you protect the country militarily against an enemy at the top?

what other recourse is there when no function of government considered legitimate wants to do anything?

This needs to be posted everywhere. Since when do we accept software that can neither be completely tested nor predicted? It’s not fit for purpose in serious business use cases, only for entertainment and parlor tricks.

I can't understate how bad of an idea it is to have a non-determinstic pile of shit responsible for managing any aspect of your production environment, given all of the dumb shit AI has done to peoples non-production machines when given access and clear instructions to not do those things.

Anyone that is advocating this is either hilariously inept, or in bed with the AI companies.

Please stop rolling the adapter generator dice things have gone too far

Fediverse, the social media system for 40+ year old people who built the world wide web and regret it.

Dear news reporters:

I do not care how many movies you watched in the 1980s and 1990s. The Terminator, let alone SKYNET, does not exist. We have not gotten to the point in which Durandal and Leela will fight to take over a space station. JOSHUA is not going to stop projecting nuclear winter and instead opt to play a game of chess. Number Five is not, despite how cute he may be, alive.

Computers are still computers are still computers and will only do what a human being programs them to do, and people are stupid. Stop assigning them agency. Say that "Microsoft created an automatic hacking program which was inadequately contained." Assign the blame CORRECTLY, because you cannot blame a computer, it's doing exactly what it's programmed to do.

OpenAI is a dead slab of metal and electrons arranged to mimic a human face and if you refuse to see that then you're as brain-dead as any chunk of silicon.

Holy shit ted Cruz actually said the thing out loud.

Time to move away from DigitalOcean.

Watching this Apple event tout how iPhones will soon be able to record ambient audio/conversations and transcribe "high level notes" for you. It's billed as private and end-to-end encrypted, but I think the bigger harm is the normalization of always-listening devices. It's creepy and not normal.

My kind of café

I got a e-ink nametag today, and it's so nifty!

It's 4-color (🖤🤍💛❤️), but it does my profile pic quite well–the hair even looks kinda blue.

It's NFC and doesn't need any batteries, which is pretty sick too 🤘
